The Summer Day Camp and School Age Child Care programs at the Schuylkill YMCA offer elements that complement the academic curriculum of the school districts that we serve. These programs are a good place to affirm and learn values. It is also a good place to supplement the school curriculum in areas such as community service, environmental education, arts & humanities and to teach things that the school cannot get to during the school year.
Environmental Education
Students leaving this program become responsible stewards of the natural world. The focus is on education, and environmental or ecological issues. This allows students an experience with compliments their lessons back in the classroom. In addition, the youth in our program develop a habit of studying and completing schoolwork on their own. They develop observation skills; learn how information can be accessed in many was by reading or being read to. They become better leaders and supporters and develop specific skills, and specific skills, and self-confidence and self-awareness.
Art & Humanities
The structure of our Summer Day Camp programs allows for many needed opportunities for educational enrichment, in particular the visual and dramatic arts. Because of our ability to invest more time towards engaging children into projects, we are able to involve many different intelligences, such as interpersonal, environmental, and kinetic, as well as utilize cross-curricular learning to involve the children in multi-dimensional artistic experiences. Children in grades 1-5 spend approximately 1/2 hour-45 minutes per day experiencing arts & humanities in our YMCA programs. The majority of the children's time is spent learning by doing hands on lessons.
